Rules checked 21 October 2026 against the Odisha Gazette. How we calculate
Who charges it and how
The professional tax in Odisha was charged under the Odisha State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 2000, which the Odisha State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments (Repeal) Ordinance, 2026 repealed. Under the ordinance there is nothing for employers to deduct from salary for April 2026 onwards; check with your employer whether that has changed.
The Constitution limits professional tax to ₹2,500 a year for each person (article 276(2)).

What changed in Odisha in 2026
The Odisha State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments (Repeal) Ordinance, 2026, published on 21 April 2026, repealed the 2000 Act with effect from 1 April 2026. Tax for earlier periods can still be recovered.
An ordinance lapses unless the state legislature replaces it with an Act (article 213 of the Constitution). A bill on professional tax was reported passed by the Odisha Assembly in September 2026, but we have not seen its text or whether it has become law, so we cannot say what applies to salary from then. Check with your employer or payroll team.
It lowers your income tax only in the old regime
In the old regime, the professional tax you pay is deducted from your salary income (section 19 of the Income-tax Act 2025). The new regime, which applies unless you choose the old one, does not allow the deduction (section 202(2)(a)). Compare the two regimes.
