On a $80,000 salary you take home $64,200.00 a year, or $2,469.23 a fortnight ($5,350.00 a month, $1,234.62 a week), after income tax and the Medicare levy. Your employer pays $9,600.00 super on top.

Paid by your employer on top
Over 26 fortnights, about $16,172 is withheld from your pay. You owe $15,800 for 2026-27, so about $372 would come back when you lodge your tax return, if nothing else changes.
Rules checked 20 October 2026 against the ATO's 2026-27 resident tax rates, low income tax offset, Medicare levy, study loan and super guarantee pages, and PAYG withholding Schedules 1 and 8. How we check.
For an Australian resident for tax with one job, no other income or fringe benefits, treated as single for the Medicare levy, with the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses and no other deductions. Foreign residents and working holiday makers are not modelled. Why your payslip differs from your tax bill.
These figures are estimates based on the information you entered and the 2026-27 rates and thresholds published by the Australian Taxation Office, with the Medicare levy low-income thresholds for 2025-26, the latest published. They are general information, not tax, financial or legal advice. Your actual pay and tax can differ, for example because of other income, deductions, your family situation, allowances, salary packaging or how your employer runs payroll. Check your payslip, or ask your employer, a registered tax agent or the ATO, before relying on them.
Your tax for 2026-27
$80,000 pays $14,220 income tax and $1,580 Medicare levy
Your taxable income is your $80,000 salary less the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses: $79,000. The first $18,200 of it is tax-free, and the rest is taxed in bands:
There is no low income tax offset above $66,667 of taxable income.
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income: $1,580.00.
For an Australian resident with this salary as their only income, the $1,000 standard deduction and no other deductions, and appropriate private hospital cover (no Medicare levy surcharge). 2026-27 tax rates.
Your payslip: about $622 tax withheld a fortnight
| Paid | Gross pay | Tax withheld | Net pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | $1,538.46 | $311.00 | $1,227.46 |
| Fortnightly | $3,076.92 | $622.00 | $2,454.92 |
| Monthly | $6,666.67 | $1,348.00 | $5,318.67 |
Over 26 fortnights, about $16,172 is withheld from your pay. You owe $15,800 for 2026-27, so about $372 would come back when you lodge your tax return, if nothing else changes. Of that, $320 comes from the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses, which comes off when you lodge: the ATO's 2026-27 withholding formulas were published on 17 June 2026, before the law that created the deduction received assent on 26 June, and as far as we can tell they do not allow for it. The rest comes from how the withholding formulas are built and rounded.
If you don't claim the tax-free threshold from this employer, for example because it is a second job, $842 is withheld a fortnight instead. Why your payslip differs.
With a HELP debt you repay $1,421 a year
Your repayment income is $79,000, your taxable income after the $1,000 standard deduction. Compulsory repayments are worked out only on repayment income above $69,528 in 2026-27; at this salary the repayment is 15c for each $1 over $69,528. That leaves $2,414.58 a fortnight in take-home pay. Your employer withholds about $60 a fortnight towards it, and the exact amount is settled when you lodge.
Super on top: $9,600 a year
Your employer pays the super guarantee, 12% of your earnings, into your super fund on top of your salary: $9,600.00 a year, or $369.23 a fortnight. From 1 July 2026, under Payday Super, employers pay it each payday. With super, your employer pays $89,600 a year in total.
If $80,000 is a package including super, your salary is $71,428.57 and super $8,571.43, and you take home $2,245.05 a fortnight.
| Salary sacrifice a year | Into super after 15% tax | Take-home a fortnight | Cost to take-home a year | Cost of each $1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $2,500 | $2,125.00 | $2,403.85 | $1,700.00 | 68c |
| $5,000 | $4,250.00 | $2,338.46 | $3,400.00 | 68c |
| $10,000 | $8,500.00 | $2,207.69 | $6,800.00 | 68c |
Your super guarantee uses $9,600 of the $32,500 concessional contributions cap, leaving $22,900 for salary sacrifice before extra tax can apply, unless you can carry forward unused cap amounts. Salary sacrifice is taxed at 15% in your fund instead of at your marginal rate, and still counts for HELP and the Medicare levy surcharge. Super and salary sacrifice calculator.
A $5,000 rise adds $130.77 a fortnight
| Rise | Take-home a fortnight | Extra a fortnight | Kept of each $1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| +$1,000 to $81,000 | $2,495.38 | $26.15 | 68c |
| +$5,000 to $85,000 | $2,600.00 | $130.77 | 68c |
| +$10,000 to $90,000 | $2,730.77 | $261.54 | 68c |
Income tax is $568 lower than in 2025-26
Two things changed on 1 July 2026: the tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 fell from 16% to 15%, and the new $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses lowers taxable income. For someone who claimed no work-related expenses in 2025-26, that cuts income tax on $80,000 from $14,788.00 to $14,220.00, and the Medicare levy from $1,600.00 to $1,580.00. A further cut in the first rate, to 14%, is legislated from 1 July 2027, and a working Australians tax offset of up to $250 from 2027-28. Treasury Laws Amendment (More Cost of Living Relief) Act 2025; Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 1) Act 2026.

Why your payslip may differ
Your employer withholds tax each pay with the ATO's formulas, rounded to the dollar, so over a year it rarely matches your tax bill exactly; for $80,000 the gap is $372, including $320 from the $1,000 standard deduction, which comes off when you lodge. A second job, not claiming the tax-free threshold, the Medicare levy surcharge or a year with 27 fortnightly pays make a bigger difference.
